The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has released end of this summer an updated proposal to restrict PFAS under REACH. Prepared by Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden, the update incorporates over 5,600 comments from a 2023 consultation.
The revised proposal now covers eight additional sectors, including printing, machinery, medical uses, military, explosives, technical textiles, and broader industrial applications. It also explores alternatives to a full ban, allowing controlled use in areas like manufacturing, transport, electronics, energy, and sealing.
ECHA’s scientific committees for Risk Assessment (RAC) and Socio-Economic Analysis (SEAC) are reviewing the proposal to provide independent guidance to the European Commission, which will make the final decision with EU Member States. The committees aim to complete their evaluation by the end of 2026.
The restriction seeks to reduce PFAS emissions and make products and processes safer.
