The European Commission is currently evaluating the Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD), the European policy that reduces the use of certain single-use plastic products, including food containers and promotes reusable alternatives. The directive focuses, among other things, on the ten most common plastic products found on beaches and certain types of plastic fishing gear. The measures range from restrictions on use to producer responsibility.

The aim of this evaluation is to gain insight into the effects of the SUPD on the environment, human health, the economy and society. It assesses the extent to which the directive is effective, efficient and coherent, and whether the current rules are still in line with the objectives set. This assessment is part of the legally required policy review and forms the basis for any future adjustments.

Various parties can share their experiences and data during the evaluation, including citizens, businesses, NGOs, government agencies and researchers. This information is being collected via an online consultation and call for evidence, which is available in all official EU languages and runs until 17 March 2026. More information about the evaluation, including the link to the consultation, is available on the European Commission's official page: Rules on single-use plastics and fishing gear – evaluation.

The results of this evaluation will guide possible future amendments to the SUPD, with the aim of further strengthening environmental protection and supporting the transition to a circular and sustainable economy.
