Regulation (EU) 2026/245 was recently published, whereby the European Commission amends the so-called Plastics Regulation (Regulation (EU) No 10/2011) on plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food.
This Regulation (EU) 2026/245 updates the list of authorised substances in Annex I to Regulation (EU) No 10/2011. The specific amendments are as follows:
- Amendment of substance FCM 768; change of the name of the substance
- Addition of six new substances following a positive opinion from EFSA
- Addition of a note concerning compliance monitoring (note 31)
The purpose of the amending Regulation is to clarify the existing legislation and adapt it to the latest scientific insights and regulatory developments.
Although it is not a completely new regulatory framework, the changes may have practical implications for manufacturers of plastic materials, plastic processors and food producers who use such materials. The amendments are part of the broader evolution within European food contact materials policy, whereby existing rules are regularly updated to take account of new scientific insights and policy priorities.
