Fost Plus and Valipac are jointly launching the Elimination Lab for e-commerce: an innovative support programme that helps Belgian e-commerce companies to drastically reduce or even completely eliminate transport packaging for single-order shipments where technically and commercially feasible. IBE-BVI is also actively involved in this initiative.
The launch comes at a crucial time for the sector. The e-commerce sector continues to grow strongly, whilst the European Packaging & Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is simultaneously imposing stricter targets regarding packaging waste and empty space in shipping packaging. Furthermore, 80% of Belgian consumers believe that online orders today contain too much packaging material.
With the Elimination Lab, Fost Plus and Valipac aim to guide companies towards a smart and forward-looking ‘no pack’ strategy, whereby products are shipped directly in their original packaging without an additional shipping box.
Ten Belgian e-commerce companies will be given the opportunity to undergo a free individual business scan, during which experts will analyse their logistics processes, order profiles and packaging potential. Six selected companies will then progress to a comprehensive innovation programme involving technical validation, practical testing, consumer research and support with implementation.
The Elimination Lab brings together various industry players to make sustainable packaging solutions for e-commerce tangible and practical.
Within this project, IBE-BVI is contributing its expertise in testing and validating packaging solutions. Specifically, we will help evaluate whether the proposed innovative ‘no pack’ solutions pass the necessary laboratory tests and are practically viable within the e-commerce sector. In this way, we actively support the further development of feasible and reliable packaging strategies.
For these selected companies, this means not only a lower environmental impact, but also opportunities in terms of cost optimisation, customer experience and future compliance with European regulations.
